Motivation Letter System Engineer

A good motivation letter for System Engineer connects a concrete personal experience with what the position actually requires - not a summary of the CV. Structure: salutation, a concrete reference to the position or company, a substantiated example from your own experience, an honest closing.

Example

Dear Ms. Hofer For the past three years I have managed an environment with 24 virtual servers, three sites and around 180 workstations at an industrial company in Aargau. Last winter I planned and carried out the migration from a local Exchange server to Microsoft 365 over four weekends, without a single working day lost in production. You are looking for someone who doesn't just run infrastructure but also documents it. Since my apprenticeship I have kept operational documentation that lets a stand-in become productive within half a day - something I have valued ever since I once had to step in myself without any documentation. I am used to on-call duty and am happy to keep taking it on. My AZ-800 certification is valid until 2027. Kind regards

Common Mistakes

  • Willingness to do on-call and weekend work is not addressed, even though it is almost always part of the job
  • Certifications are missing or outdated - Microsoft certificates have expiry dates
  • Only technologies are named, not the size of the environment managed
  • The move from a service provider to internal operations is not explained, even though it is often questioned
